This paper examines the strategies and contexts of the Austrian trade union federation's (ÖGB) networking with African trade unions between 1955 and 1965. By analyzing annual reports and selected journal articles, it identifies Austrian motivations and evaluations of transnational trade union solidarity.
Mainly due to activism by the youth department, the ÖGB managed to emancipate itself from the initially influential International Confederation of Trade Unions (ICFTU) and provided an early form of non-governmental development aid in the 1960s.
