Emperor Frederick II and the Kingship of Jerusalem
Using the letters Hermann von Salza sent to an unknown correspondent at the Curia, this paper tries to explain the actions Emperor Frederick II performed in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on 18 March 1229. It is argued that Frederick could not have placed the crown on his head in a form of self-coronation but rather celebrated the end of his crusade in a way that did not offend the local nobles or the papacy. It will also be shown how little Frederick’s visit to the Holy Land affected his status as regent for his infant son Konrad and the succession in the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
