The following paper analyses the ambivalent relationship between the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DÖAV) and issues of nature conservation in the first half of the 20th century. It examines how the DÖAV positioned itself in the emerging nature conservation movement and how the club dealt with the conflict between the conservation and exploitation of nature.
