Abstract

Roman Sexual Morality in the First Century AD

The following thesis investigates Roman sexual morality in the first century AD by examining Augustus’ legislation on marriage and morals as well as scrutinizing sexually obscene Pompeian graffiti. As will be demonstrated, the sexual moral demands of Roman society manifested themselves in a rigid sexual hierarchy, which regulated the sexual lives of men and women on diverging levels.
