Abstract

“... Let Me Just Be Freed from the Suffering to Come.” A Comparison of Readers’ Letters in the Women’s Magazines “Wiener Hausfrau” and “Die Unzufriedene” in 1925

Nowadays, the“GoldenTwenties”areperceivedasatimeinwhichwomenwere able to break out of the bourgeois corset. A new image of women, the “Neue Frau”(“New Woman”), emerged. But what did women themselves say about the time they were living in? The following bachelor thesis will compare reader’s letters in two Austrian women’s magazines, published in 1925. With the help of digital tools, hundreds of reader’s letters are analyzed in a quantitative, but also qualitative manner. The paper concludes that the social democratic magazine “Die Unzufriedene” contains a broader spectrum of themes and political issues than the conservative magazine “Wiener Hausfrau”.
